- Long Term Effect on Organizations and Individuals copyright

Do
you know an adrenaline junkie? Works hard, plays hard and never
stops for lunch.
Throw
in a dozen cups of coffee and the buzz becomes addictive
-
into
overstress and overload.
Alternately
there is understress, underload and boredom -
-
no
challenge, no direction and no motivation.
In
a civilized society, it is generally not acceptable for human beings
to take their frustrations out on another person.
Punching the boss just because you disagree, may scupper your chances
of promotion.
Walking
away from meetings allows the other person to win the argument.
Phoning
in sick may count against you in the long term.
Frustration
held in check may need an outlet that is harmless to other people.
-
Difficulties
arise when rules are interpreted differently by individuals so
creating conflicts and confrontation.
-
Some
individuals create difficulties and become resistant to changes
that pose a threat to their position and comfort.
-
The
organization can be viewed by some as a threat to their freedom,
autonomy or identity.
-
Sometimes real hardships are endured for example: farmers, foot
and mouth crisis, Afghanistan
-
Strikes
may happen; VIOLENCE may erupt, bullying and terrorizing may occur;
deaths may occur. Sept 11th 2001
Workplace bullying may occur -
Many web sites - search workplace bullying or bullying
Breakdown,
disease and dysfunction may occur - see performance
pressure on show - just like a car that is never serviced or runs
out of petrol.
Organizations
experience an increase in sickness, accidents* and conflict.
-
Individuals
may experience disturbed patterns of lifestyle.
-
Family
relationships become strained.
-
Increases
occur in, stimulants such as coffee, alcohol, smoking, drugs and
accidents*, disease or illness.

UK
workers crumble under the strain Published on: 26-6-2001 ©
We
already know that UK employees work the longest hours in Europe -
now we know how much this costs.
A
new study from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) shows that stressed-out
staff members take 6.5 million working days off sick every year -
and
that nearly 500,000 people in the UK suffer from depression or anxiety
caused by work-related stress.
The
researchers found that almost 150,000 workers took at least one month
a year off work because of stress in their jobs,
costing
employers nearly £370 million. The HSE says the cost, in terms
of the impact on society, is approaching an annual tally of £3.75
billion.

Press *There seems to be new thinking about use of the word accident.
In
future, the British Medical Journal will apparently use other words
in place of accident;
Accidents
are considered to be preventable and phrases like tiredness kills
are now common.
